Mentoring Programmes

Do you want your film seen by the right audiences on the right platforms?

Are you disillusioned with traditional distribution methods?

Do you crave creative and financial independence in the distribution of your film?

At We Are The Tonic, we believe that every film should be seen. Of the thousands of films produced each year, only an average of 13 make it to cinemas each week and online and on DVD, the majority get lost with so many titles released.

Our passion is to help filmmakers get their films out there but we know from experience just how challenging that is, so we've developed two unique programmes where we provide the right information, contacts and support to make it a reality.

One of the most experienced distribution and marketing experts in the business, Deborah Rowland, and her team, work with film makers, production companies and those new to the industry, giving personalised mentoring in direct distribution.

Ex-Artificial Eye, Curzon, Icon and EOne, the advice and support is practical and based on very real, extensive experience from across distribution, exhibition and international sales. You'll get the inside track on film marketing and distribution, and everything you need to get your own film out there to the right audiences, on the best platforms, and backed up with strong marketing - smoothly, quickly and within budget.

On our three month "Inside Track" programme, or our more in-depth 6 month "Complete Distribution" programme, you will:
  • Find out everything you need to know to make your film stand out enough to reach audiences
  • Identify what film distribution and marketing processes will work for your film
  • Establish the right positioning and target audiences for your film so you can reach them easily and effectively
  • Build and put in practice your own release strategy and marketing plan
  • Get practical, one-on-one support, guidance and contacts from experienced industry professionals
Each programme is tailored to your needs and the needs of your film, and sessions are usually a combination of tutorials (delivered by Deborah, the Tonic team, and other industry experts), team working/brainstorming meetings, and 121 sessions.

Topics covered can include: the distribution process, direct distribution, release planning, strategy and dating, assets, marketing and grass roots, crowd funding, social media, publicity, festival and awards, competitor analysis, budgeting and forecasts, campaign development, international sales, working with venues, SWOT analysis, and marketing brainstorms.

We can also create bespoke programmes or training sessions for you on request.

Eligible applicants can apply for the following grants towards our mentoring programmes:

  • Creative Skillset Funded Training - you could get 50% of the cost of a programme with us covered! See HERE for details and we can help you with your application.
  • Film For Cymru Wales - BFI NET.WORK's Horizons Fund could provide you with up to £3,000 towards working with us. See HERE for details and we can help you with your application.
  • The John Brabourne Awards - a talent development programme providing financial assistance of between £1,000 and £5,000 to individuals working behind the scenes in the Film and TV industries. See HERE for details and we can help you with your application.
